Real-Time Dust and Noise Monitoring at Lynemouth Beach

    Background

During construction activity at a landfill site near Lynemouth Beach, air quality and noise impacts were a key concern. Planning conditions required real-time monitoring to protect nearby sensitive receptors, including residents and site operatives, from the effects of dust and noise exposure.

    Challenge

The site's location and activity type meant that both dust and noise monitoring had to be carried out in line with strict planning conditions. Monitoring was required at multiple points to capture upwind and downwind concentrations, alongside wind speed and direction, ensuring a full understanding of potential air quality and noise impacts.

    Solution

    • Air quality monitoring was undertaken at three locations using MCERTS Indicative certified monitors, positioned both upwind and downwind of construction activities.
    • Noise monitoring was carried out with Type 1 compliant sound level meters, in line with BS EN 61672-1:2013 specifications.
    • A solar array powered the equipment, enabling continuous, unattended monitoring at this remote coastal site.
    • Real-time monitoring provided the contractor with immediate feedback, supporting both preventative dust mitigation and reactive interventions if dust alerts were triggered.

    Outcome

    • Continuous monitoring met all planning condition requirements.
    • Sensitive receptors were safeguarded from excessive noise and dust exposure.
    • The client benefited from proactive, evidence-based site management tools, minimising air quality impacts and ensuring compliance.
