Chimney Emissions Testing Demand Surges as MCP Deadlines Approach

Alkali Environmental has seen a significant increase in demand for chimney emissions testing across the UK as Medium Combustion Plant (MCP) permit deadlines drive operators to arrange compliance testing for the first time.

Chimney emissions testing — also known as stack emissions testing or flue gas analysis — measures pollutant concentrations from industrial chimneys to demonstrate Environmental Permit compliance. Under MCP regulations, all combustion plant between 1MW and 50MW thermal input must now hold valid permits and conduct periodic MCERTS-accredited emissions testing.

Key drivers of increased chimney testing demand include: - MCP transitional deadlines bringing previously unregulated plant into the permitting regime - New data centre backup generators requiring first-time chimney testing - Hospital and university CHP plant requiring MCP compliance evidence - Industrial boiler replacements triggering new permit conditions

Our expanded fleet of portable FTIR analysers enables us to conduct chimney emissions testing across multiple sites simultaneously, with lead times as short as 2 weeks. All chimney testing is conducted to MCERTS standards by UKAS-accredited technicians (Lab No. 24303).

For operators unsure whether their chimney or stack requires emissions testing, we offer a consultation to identify monitoring obligations and recommend a compliance programme. Request a free compliance check →
