Complex Multi-Pollutant Stack Testing at Energy from Waste Facility
Alkali Environmental's stack testing division has successfully completed a complex multi-pollutant emissions monitoring campaign at a major Energy from Waste (EfW) facility in the North of England.
Energy from Waste plants operate under some of the UK's most stringent emission limit values, set under the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) Chapter IV (formerly the Waste Incineration Directive). Our testing scope included:
- Particulate matter (dust) — gravimetric sampling per BS EN 13284-1
- Heavy metals (Sb, As, Pb, Cr, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, V, Cd, Tl, Hg) — isokinetic sampling per BS EN 14385
- Dioxins and furans (PCDD/F) — long-term sampling per BS EN 1948
- Acid gases (HCl, HF, SO2) — FTIR and wet chemical methods
- Carbon monoxide, TOC, NOx — continuous and extractive methods
- Mercury — sorbent trap and CEMS validation
The campaign was conducted over 5 days across three emission points, coordinating closely with the plant operations team to minimise disruption while ensuring representative testing conditions. All testing was completed within the client's EA reporting timeline.
EfW operators face particular compliance challenges due to the breadth of pollutants monitored, the tight emission limit values, and the EA's close scrutiny of this sector. Our experience with EfW stack testing means we understand the operational constraints, the regulatory expectations, and the reporting formats that facilitate smooth EA interactions.
Results from this campaign confirmed compliance with all IED emission limit values, supporting the operator's continued permit compliance. Discuss your EfW testing requirements →
