BS 4142 Noise Assessment Enables Industrial Expansion Without Objection

Alkali Environmental's noise consultancy team has completed a BS 4142 noise impact assessment for a manufacturing facility expanding its operations in South Yorkshire, securing planning approval without objection from the local Environmental Health Officer.

The assessment evaluated the cumulative noise impact of new external plant (compressors, extraction fans, and cooling units) on the nearest residential receptors, located approximately 80 metres from the site boundary.

Our assessment methodology included: - Baseline noise monitoring at 3 receptor positions over 5 days (daytime and night-time) - Source noise measurements of existing and proposed plant - BS 4142:2014+A1:2019 rating level calculations with acoustic character corrections for tonality - Cumulative assessment of new plant with existing operational noise - Mitigation design — acoustic enclosures and attenuated intake/discharge specified to achieve BS 4142 compliance

The assessment demonstrated that with the proposed mitigation measures in place, the rating level would be at or below the background sound level — indicating a low impact in accordance with BS 4142.

For industrial operators planning expansions, new plant installations or operational changes, a proactive noise assessment prevents costly objections and demonstrates good environmental management. Discuss your industrial noise assessment needs →
